Noise and weak airflow are useful symptoms to report, but the cause needs establishing before selecting an alteration.

Overview
A duct route affects more than the space directly below it. Changes can influence connected branches, fan duty and the distribution of air elsewhere. We establish the affected system so a local modification does not become an unexplained loss of performance in another part of the premises.
What the work can include
The scope covers surveys, fabrication and installation of defined duct routes, fittings, supports, terminals and access provisions. It identifies insulation, sealing and associated building work where required. Repair and alteration work starts from the existing system's purpose and condition.
Deliverables include the agreed layout, installed changes and relevant inspection or commissioning records. Access requirements remain part of the design: components needing future inspection or cleaning must be reachable. A route that fits above the ceiling but blocks maintenance access is not a complete solution for the building team.
Design decisions and interfaces
Duct size, route and fittings affect resistance, noise and available airflow. The design must relate to the fan and intended duty rather than use whatever space is left after other services are installed. Changes to branches need consideration of the wider distribution and any balancing required.
General ventilation, kitchen extract and local exhaust ventilation have different purposes and requirements. Their ductwork should not be treated as interchangeable. Penetrations through fire-resisting construction, dampers and specialist protection also need the relevant design and trade coordination. The instruction identifies those interfaces before openings or alterations are made.
Assessment and preparation
Provide plans, existing drawings, airflow information and details of the plant serving the route. Identify proposed room changes, known restrictions and previous cleaning or inspection findings. Confirm whether the brief concerns a local repair, a new branch or a redesigned system.
Access information should cover ceiling voids, risers, roofs and occupied spaces. Include available asbestos information where relevant to the affected building materials and the required survey arrangements before disturbance. Establish working hours, isolation authority and the people coordinating other trades. Accurate route information helps avoid conflicts with lighting, pipework and structural elements.
How the work proceeds
We establish the system requirement and survey the route. The proposal resolves dimensions, supports, access points and connections, together with interfaces requiring specialist input. Installation is coordinated with the building programme so the ductwork can be inspected before it is concealed.
Completed work receives the checks appropriate to the agreed specification. Where airflow changes, the scope includes the relevant commissioning or balancing activity. Handover records the route and remaining actions, including inaccessible sections. Any required making good and specialist interface records should be collected with the installation information rather than left in separate contractor correspondence.
Cost, timing and disruption
Route length, material, dimensions, fittings, access and working height affect cost. Insulation, specialist protection, supports and restricted working hours add different requirements. A straight accessible run has a different installation effort from a route through occupied ceilings and several constrained risers.
Plan shutdowns and work areas before installation. Dust protection, removal routes and coordination with ceiling reinstatement affect the programme. Compare quotations against the same specification, including access provisions, commissioning and records. Leaving these tasks out can produce a physically installed duct that the client cannot maintain or use as intended.

Frequently asked questions
Can new ductwork use the existing fan?
The design must check the revised resistance and required airflow against the fan and controls. An available connection does not establish that the existing equipment can serve the added route.
Does duct installation include cleaning?
Define it in the instruction. Installation, cleaning and hygiene assessment have different scopes, and existing sections may need separate attention before the revised system is put into use.
Why are access panels needed?
They allow relevant components and duct sections to be reached for inspection, cleaning or maintenance. Their positions must suit the actual tasks and remain accessible after ceilings and other services are completed.
Can ducts pass through a fire-resisting wall?
The penetration and any required protection need the appropriate design and coordination. Do not treat forming the opening and sealing around a duct as an unspecified finishing task.
