Overview
A building extension can affect more than the nearest distribution board. The assessment should trace relevant upstream and downstream dependencies so the proposed change is considered within the actual supply arrangement.
What the work can include
Work can include reviewing system records, defining inspection and maintenance needs, assessing equipment condition, coordinating specialist investigations and developing repair or replacement packages. The exact plant, cables, switchgear, transformers and associated controls are listed in the scope.
Outputs include the agreed system boundary, findings, action priorities and relevant updated drawings or test records. A project brief identifies the technical design, operational authority and external interfaces needed; it does not treat all electrical equipment as a single interchangeable maintenance task.
Important decisions
Ownership and control. A network operator, landlord, occupier or other asset owner may control different parts of the supply. Establish who authorises access, operation and work for each part.
Maintain or replace. Condition, supportability, spare parts, duty and available outage windows shape the decision. Age alone does not establish the required action.
System interfaces. Protection, earthing, controls and operating arrangements must be considered when changing connected equipment. HSE highlights the specialist knowledge needed for work such as high-voltage switchgear maintenance in its electrical safety introduction.
Assessment and preparation
Provide single-line diagrams if available: these show the principal supply paths and connected equipment. Include asset details, ownership information, inspection findings, previous work and the load change or problem being considered.
Identify the party controlling the system, access restrictions and the operational consequence of interruption. Documents are checked against the actual scope; an old drawing cannot be assumed to describe later alterations. Missing information becomes a defined survey or records task before dependent work proceeds.
How the work proceeds
We establish the work boundary and responsible parties, review the available evidence and identify the appropriate technical assessment. The resulting scope sets out the design or maintenance tasks, competent resources, operating permissions and verification requirements.
Work proceeds through an agreed safe system, with switching, isolation and return to service controlled by the appropriate authorised people. Handover records what changed, tests undertaken, operating restrictions and follow-up requirements. Required drawings and asset records are updated so the next maintenance team can understand the installation.
Cost, timing and disruption
Equipment type, voltage system, condition, specialist attendance, test scope and access affect price. External coordination, outage availability and long-lead equipment can determine the programme as much as physical installation time.
A complete proposal separates survey and engineering work from delivery, temporary arrangements and reinstatement. Clarify who provides operational control and any network-related work so those responsibilities do not become gaps between quotations.

Frequently asked questions
Does low voltage mean the equipment is safe to work on?
No. Low voltage is a system classification, not a statement that contact or intervention is safe. Electrical work still needs appropriate competence and control.
Can you work on equipment owned by the network operator?
Its owner controls the authority and delivery route. The project must identify that interface and obtain the appropriate arrangements; a property owner's instruction does not transfer control of network assets.
What if we do not have current drawings?
Provide what exists and identify known changes. A defined records review and site assessment can establish the information needed before dependent design or work.
Does changing one item require a whole-site shutdown?
Not necessarily. The system layout, isolation boundaries and work determine the affected area. The technical plan establishes the actual outage and return-to-service checks.
