Overview
A new socket location is not the same question as additional supply capacity. Define both the physical point of use and the equipment demand so the assessment addresses the actual requirement rather than only the visible fitting.
What the work can include
The package can include reviewing demand and circuit information, assessing distribution equipment, planning new circuits or distribution routes, replacing appropriate equipment and arranging inspection and testing of the work. Cable containment, penetrations and making good are identified alongside the electrical installation.
Outputs include the agreed circuit scope, relevant design and test information, identification of affected equipment and updated records. Metering or demand assessment can be included where existing information is insufficient to establish the basis for a proposed addition.
Important decisions
Space versus capacity. An unused position in a board does not establish that the supply and connected equipment can accept the new demand. Cable routes, protective devices and upstream capacity need assessment.
Demand versus connected ratings. The design considers how equipment is used together. The IET discusses maximum demand and the value of supply logging when assessing additional load in its electrical diversity guidance.
Local alteration versus wider upgrade. A defined addition may be possible within the existing arrangement; other work can require changes to boards, distribution circuits or the incoming supply. Establish that dependency before selecting equipment.
Assessment and preparation
Provide equipment specifications, intended locations, usage patterns and any available circuit schedules or installation reports. Explain which equipment operates together and whether future additions are already planned.
Access is needed to assess the relevant installation and routes safely. Identify restricted rooms, fire-resisting construction, sensitive areas and landlord requirements. The survey establishes what can be confirmed, what needs measurement and which concealed routes require further investigation before pricing.
How the work proceeds
We establish the load and location brief, assess the existing distribution and agree the design and work boundary. Where the incoming supply needs alteration, the relevant external party and responsibility are identified before the installation programme is fixed.
Delivery coordinates electrical work with containment, building fabric and other trades. Outages are agreed around affected users and equipment. Completion includes the relevant inspection and testing, circuit identification and handover information. Unrelated defects found in the existing installation are recorded with a clear next action.
Cost, timing and disruption
Demand, route length, containment, access, board condition, protective equipment and the extent of making good affect cost. Work through occupied areas or protected building elements can require additional coordination and finishing tasks.
Programme allowances should include design checks, any supply alteration, materials and outages. A small physical addition can have a wider effect if existing records are poor or capacity has to be established before the change.

Frequently asked questions
Does a spare way in a board mean more equipment can be added?
No. It shows physical space, not verified electrical capacity. The supply, circuit design, protection and intended demand still need assessment.
Can the work be priced from the equipment rating alone?
The rating is useful, but location, operating pattern, route and existing supply information also affect the design and price.
Will every room lose power during the work?
The required isolation depends on the installation and task. The work plan identifies the affected areas and the checks needed before power is restored.
Does a distribution upgrade fix every tripping fault?
No. Tripping can have different causes. Investigate the fault so a capacity or equipment change addresses the evidence rather than an assumption.
