Overview
A switchgear or transformer replacement is not selected from size or appearance alone. The role in the installation, electrical characteristics, protection and physical interfaces all affect what is suitable. Significant symptoms or reported defects need the appropriate operational response before routine project planning.
What the work can include
Work can include asset and records review, condition assessment, specialist maintenance or testing, repair feasibility and replacement planning. The scope identifies the particular equipment and associated controls, connections and protection to be included.
Deliverables can include findings, prioritised actions, a replacement specification, work and test records, and updated drawings. Specialist investigations are selected to answer an identified question; the programme should make clear which work requires the equipment out of service.
Important decisions
Repairability. Assess condition, availability of compatible parts and the ability to maintain the equipment safely. A repeated repair may be less useful than a properly developed replacement plan, but replacement also needs system assessment.
Compatibility. Connected equipment, protection arrangements, operating duty and physical connections shape the specification. A larger rating does not automatically provide a compatible upgrade.

Assessment and preparation
Provide equipment references, manufacturer information, drawings, earlier inspection findings and maintenance history. Identify known faults, environmental conditions and changes to the loads served. Photographs are useful only where they can be obtained without approaching or opening restricted equipment.
Confirm who owns and controls each asset. Site assessment considers working space, delivery routes, lifting or removal requirements and the effect of the outage. Transformer arrangements can also involve fluid handling and associated environmental controls, which need to be included where relevant.
How the work proceeds
We establish the asset boundary and technical question, then define the appropriate assessment and specialist delivery requirements. Findings inform repair or replacement options, their dependencies and the checks needed before return to service.
The agreed work plan coordinates operating authority, isolation, adjacent equipment and affected users. Installation or maintenance records identify the work actually performed and any settings or drawings changed through the authorised process. Handover includes verification results, operating information and open actions; energisation and acceptance follow the defined technical controls.
Cost, timing and disruption
Equipment characteristics, test scope, specialist resources, access, lifting, removal and replacement lead times affect cost. The outage arrangement and temporary provision may be significant parts of the package.
Clarify whether the proposal includes associated cabling, protection work, building alterations, disposal and commissioning. Comparing only the equipment price can conceal substantial differences in the work required to remove the old asset and bring the new one into service.

Frequently asked questions
Should old switchgear always be replaced?
Age is one consideration. Condition, supportability, duty, maintenance access and technical findings determine the appropriate recommendation.
Can a replacement be selected by matching the old rating?
The rating is only part of the specification. System compatibility, protection, connections, operating characteristics and physical installation need assessment.
Can thermal imaging replace all maintenance tests?
No. It can provide useful evidence for suitable equipment and conditions, but it does not examine every failure mode or replace the defined inspection and test requirements.
Who can authorise an outage on shared equipment?
The party with the relevant operating authority must be identified. A tenant or managing agent may need to coordinate with the owner or network party before the outage is confirmed.
