Overview

An outage history helps describe the problem but does not determine the answer alone. Identify what must remain supplied, what can stop and how long the interruption can be tolerated.

What the work can include

The work can include reviewing load requirements, assessing existing equipment, developing a connection and changeover scope, coordinating generator installation or replacement, and arranging maintenance and functional testing. Temporary provision needs its own connection, siting and removal plan.

The deliverables identify supported circuits, operating assumptions, the changeover arrangement and relevant inspection or test records. Fuel, exhaust, ventilation, access and controls are considered alongside electrical work. Where civil works, enclosures or associated services are needed, they form named parts of the package.

Important decisions

Selected loads or the whole property. Backing up selected circuits can be a different design from supporting every connected load. The assessment considers starting demand and the order in which equipment returns, not simply a total taken from equipment labels.

Generator or UPS. A generator-based arrangement has a starting and transfer sequence. Equipment that cannot tolerate that interruption may need a coordinated uninterruptible power supply. Compatibility must be assessed; Eaton explains generator and UPS interactions.

Manual or automatic operation. The choice affects controls, monitoring, the people needed on site and the test plan. These decisions must be explicit before equipment is selected.

Assessment and preparation

Provide a list of equipment needing support, available demand information, electrical drawings and details of any existing generator, UPS or transfer equipment. Identify sensitive processes, required support time and acceptable interruption.

Site assessment also considers space, access for delivery and maintenance, fuel arrangements and the effect on neighbouring areas. Engine exhaust introduces a carbon-monoxide hazard; HSE addresses generator siting in its electrical safety guidance. Siting and connection require an appropriate technical design.

How the work proceeds

We establish the backed-up loads and site constraints, assess the supply and distribution interfaces, then define the equipment and works package. Connection requirements are checked with the relevant network party where applicable; the customer instruction does not authorise work on network-owned assets.

Installation or maintenance follows the agreed safe work and outage plan. Testing needs to demonstrate the relevant operating sequence and supported loads, rather than only that the engine starts. Handover includes the tested scope, operating information, maintenance requirements and any unresolved limitations.

Cost, timing and disruption

Capacity, operating duration, noise treatment, fuel provision, delivery access, foundations, exhaust arrangements and cable routes affect cost. An existing connection point may reduce some work, but its suitability still needs assessment.

Plan time for design, equipment availability, any external permissions and coordinated testing. The interruption needed to connect and prove the arrangement must be agreed with those responsible for the affected equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Will a generator keep equipment running without interruption?

Not by itself in every arrangement. Starting and changeover take time. Identify equipment that cannot tolerate interruption so an appropriate combined solution can be assessed.

Can we connect a generator to the existing building supply?

Only through a correctly assessed and designed arrangement. Supply separation, protection and operating interfaces need technical review; a generator is not connected by improvising a feed into a socket.

Is a successful engine start enough to prove the system?

No. The required tests should address the supported loads and changeover sequence. An engine can start while a separate distribution or control issue prevents useful backup.

Can temporary generation support planned work?

Yes. Define the loads, connection, siting, support period and removal arrangements. Temporary equipment still needs safe integration and a clear operating responsibility.
